The Show:  Open to area high school floral design students only.  Students will participate in two contests during the fair based on, (1) The fair theme, “Just For the Fun Of It,” and (2) a design theme of their choice.  Students should consider design ideas, mechanics and fundamentals of creating a winning floral design.  1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Awards and a Peoples Choice Award will be presented for each contest. 

 

THEMES

1st Competition – Thursday, November 1st   -“Just For the fun Of It”

2nd Competition – Thursday, November 8th – Designer’s Choice

AWARDS

1st Place – $100 and Blue Ribbon

2nd  Place - $ 75 and Red Ribbon

3rd  Place - $ 25 and White Ribbon

Peoples Choice- $100 and Ribbon

 

For each contest, after the judges have made their decisions, from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm, ballots will be available for fair guests to vote for their favorite design.  The design receiving the most votes during this time will be the winner of the Peoples Choice Award for that contest.  This will be a democratic ballot, one person, one vote per contest, only.   Checks will be mailed at the conclusion of the Fair

SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

Students are urged to use natural floral and plant materials to symbolically represent themes.  Although accessories and props may be used to emphasize their designs, they are urged not to use expensive, antique containers or props.  Dried materials may also be used.    Designs may be any size or shape.  Judging shall be based on design distinction and flowers used; Quality of materials; originality and technical execution as well as execution of theme; Participants are not permitted in or around the show area during judging. 

 

Delivery:  Students may bring their entries to the roll up doors in back of Exhibit Hall “A”, where a member of the Jacksonville Fair Floral Design Committee will meet them. Entries should be labeled on the container bottom, obscured from view, with the student’s name, a contact phone number and the name of their professional floral designer mentor. These labels are to identify containers for pick-up.  Designs will remain on display in the Exhibit Hall until the next competition.  As students deliver their entries, (see specific instructions below,) they will receive entry tickets for the next competition.     

                                                                                     

Contest #1        Thursday, November 1st

Delivery:          Exhibit Hall “A” from 3:00 - 4:30 pm

Judging:           Promptly at 6:00 pm.  Entries will remain on exhibit until

                            contest # 2

Removal:          Designers may remove their containers Tuesday, November 6th.

                            When they deliver for contest # 2

 

Contest #2        Thursday, November 8th  

Delivery:          Exhibit Hall “A” from 3:00 - 4:30 pm

Judging:           Promptly at 6:00 pm.  Entries will remain on exhibit until the

                            conclusion of the Fair,

Removal:          Designers may begin removing their containers Sunday evening,

                            November 11th,

                            from 8:00 - 9:00 pmm, or Monday, November 12th from

                            9:00 am – 12:00 pm.

 

HOW DO I ENTER?  Entry deadling is October 1ST, or when a maximum of thirty entry forms have been received.  You may access entry forms from the Fair’s web site, www.jacksonvillefair.com.  Click on Premium Book,then Contest.  Next, click on Floral Design Competition for design rules and entry form. For those without computers, contact the Jacksonville Fairgrounds 353-0535 or the M.J. Mc Call Company, 765-1609.  Completed entry forms may be faxed, 904-353-5458, mailed or delivered to the Fair Office, (510 Fairground Place, Jacksonville Florida 32202.) in sufficient time to be received no later than October 1st.   

 

Entries received will be under the control and jurisdiction of the Greater Jacksonville Fair Association.  Every possible care will be taken to prevent damage, but in no case will the Fair Association be responsible for any damage or loss that may occur.  Designs not promptly picked up by the designated date and time shall become the property of the Fair.
