Woodturner Contest - Containers
The Jacksonville Fair is proud to host a contest and exhibit for woodturners at this year's fair. The theme of the contest will be Containers with entries accepted in two (2) categories; turned wood containers and embellished turned wood containers. Entries will be accepted on Saturday, October 25th, in Exhibit Hall "A". from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Exhibits will remain on display through the end of the fair, Sunday, November 9th.
General Rules
- Each entry must be the sole work of the entrant.
- It is preferred that the entry be created in response to the challenge of this contest but pieces completed within the 12 months prior to entry are eligible.
- Wood must be the primary medium and the use of the lathe must be obvious.
- Only amateur woodworkers are eligible to enter this contest. An amateur, for contest purposes, is someone who makes less than 25% of his or her income for the sale of their work, teaching and/or demonstrating woodturning.
- Contest promoters and/or sponsors are not responsible for late, incomplete or misdirected entries.
- An entrant may submit a total of up to three (3) entries but may only receive a maximum of one prize per category.
For Woodturning Pieces: (as opposed to the embellIshed pieces)
- It must have a clear finish (wax, lacquer,etc.) which allows the nature of the wood to be clearly seen
- Segmented pieces are allowed
For Embellished Pieces:
- Pieces may be colored using paint, dye, staining, bleaching, etc.
- Pieces may be enhanced using carving, piercing, texturing, etc.
- Judging: Judges will evaluate the following on Sunday, November 2nd.
- Quality of work, overall craftsmanship and degree of difficulty
- Design, form, originality and overall execution of the piece
- Quality of finish and, is the finish appropriate for the piece
- Material selection and the use of that material
- Functionality as a container but with consideration given for artistic license
- Other factors the judges see fit to consider
- The Judges' decisions will be final
Awards For Each Category Will Be As Follows
1st Place – Blue Ribbon and $150.00
2nd Place – Red Ribbon and $ 50.00
3rd Place – White Ribbon and $25.00
Pick-up: Entries may be picked up beginning at 8:00 pm on Sunday, November 9th or through noon, Monday, November 10th. Checks will be mailed after the fair.
If you would like to enter this competition just complete the entry form below or complete an entry form when you bring your entry to the Jacksonville Fairgrounds, 510 Fairgrounds Place, Jacksonville, Fl 32202, on Saturday, October 25th, between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Someone will be there to assist you.
